Why Women Need Hobbies After 50 (And No, Folding Laundry Doesn't Count)

Why Women Need Hobbies After 50 (And No, Folding Laundry Doesn't Count)

I know I am probably in the minority here, but I DON'T MIND LAUNDRY- it's not really a THING to me. It's more like something I do when I am doing something else. So with that said-Let's get to it!

There comes a point in life when you look around your house and wonder...

"How did everyone else's hobbies and life become my full-time job?"

For years we raise children, build careers, support spouses, care for aging parents, volunteer, organize birthdays, remember everyone's favorite snacks, remember all the birthdays and sending cards, and somehow become the official finder of lost things.

Somewhere in the middle of all of that, many women quietly pack away the things that once made them smile.

After 50, something begins to shift.

The kids need us less.
There is loss.
Our schedules change.
Retirement starts showing up on the horizon.

Our priorities change.
Our bedtime moves up.

Life gets quieter...

...and sometimes a little lonelier.

That's exactly why hobbies aren't a luxury.

They're essential.

You Deserve Something That's Just Yours

Somewhere along the way many of us started believing that spending time on ourselves was selfish.

Spoiler alert...

It isn't. SELF CARE IS NOT SELFISH

You don't have to earn an afternoon painting.
You don't need permission to start a junk journal.
You don't have to justify buying watercolor paper, a new paintbrush, or pretty scrapbook stickers.

You don't need your husbands, kids or parents permission to watch Youtube

You are allowed to have something that's simply for you.

Not because it makes money.
Not because someone else benefits.

Just because it makes your heart happy and quiets some of the chaos in your head.

And honestly?

That's reason enough.

Hobbies Refill More Than Your Craft Supplies

When you spend an hour creating something, something else quietly happens too.

Your shoulders relax.

Your mind finally gets a break from the never-ending mental checklist.

Your phone stops being the center of the universe for a little while.

You remember what it feels like to simply enjoy yourself.

You breathe deeper.

That's not wasting time.

That's taking care of yourself.

We spend so much time making sure everyone else is okay that we forget we need care too.

The truth is, when you're happier, calmer, and less stressed, everyone around you benefits too.

It's amazing what a little creative time can do for your patience.

(Ask me how I know.) wink wink........

You Don't Have to Be "Artistic"

This might be my favorite excuse to bust.

"I can't even draw a stick figure."- You may be surprised to know that I cannot draw either.

That's OK. Don't Fret.

Neither can a lot of people who come to my classes.

You don't need talent.

You need curiosity.

Painting isn't about becoming the next famous artist.

You can start here with one of my Complete Art kits

Junk journaling isn't about creating museum-worthy pages.

I junk journaled a weekend wedding trip to Missouri.

Crafting isn't a competition.

It's simply permission to play.

Remember when we were kids and nobody cared if the sun was purple?

We need a little more of that energy.

Creativity Is Self-Care That Doesn't Expire

A bubble bath is lovely.

A massage is wonderful.

A vacation? Yes, please.

But hobbies are different.

They become part of your everyday life.

They're waiting for you after a stressful day.

They're there on rainy afternoons.

They're there when life feels heavy.

They're there when you're celebrating something wonderful.

Creativity has a beautiful way of meeting us wherever we are.

Sometimes it gives us joy.

Sometimes it gives us peace.

Sometimes it simply gives our busy brains something else to think about besides the grocery list.

It's Never Too Late to Begin

One of the sweetest things I see is women walking into a class saying,

"I've never done anything like this before."

Two hours later they're laughing, making new friends, showing off their projects, and asking when the next class is.

That never gets old.

Your hobby doesn't care how old you are.

It doesn't care if you're retired.

It doesn't care if you're starting over after a divorce, becoming an empty nester, adjusting to a new chapter, grieving, or simply realizing you've forgotten what brings you joy.

It simply says...

"Come sit down. Let's make something."

Here's Your Gentle Reminder

If you've spent decades taking care of everyone else...

It's okay to take care of you now.

Not someday.

Not when the house is cleaner.

Not when the to-do list is finished.

(Because let's be honest...it never is.)

Today.

Even thirty minutes spent painting, crafting, journaling, or creating something with your hands can change the entire tone of your day.

You matter.

Your joy matters.

Your peace matters.

And maybe—just maybe—that hobby you've been thinking about trying isn't just another thing to do.

It might be exactly what your heart has been asking for all along.

Ready to Start?

If you've been looking for a gentle, encouraging place to begin, I'd love to create with you.

Every Friday I host Creative Care Fridays, where we spend a little time making something fun together. No pressure. No perfection. Just creativity, laughter, and a chance to slow down.

And each month I offer a new "Creative Simple Joys" Journal printable bundle.

You can also find hundreds of beginner-friendly projects on my YouTube channel, along with printable kits, paint togethers, junk journaling inspiration, and plenty of reminders that creativity doesn't have to be complicated to make a difference.

Because after 50...

It's finally your turn to create a little joy for yourself.
