Welcoming October: Creativity in the Changing Seasons
There’s something about October in the Northeast that makes me stop and breathe a little deeper. The crisp cool mornings, the colorful leaves swirling around, and yes—that s sad reality that the sun seems to vanish earlier every evening. One minute it’s 7:30 and I’m enjoying the sunshine through my window, the next it’s 5:45 and the lights are already on.
This seasonal shift always affects me, because you all know how much I love the summers on Long Island, but instead of letting the earlier darkness completely weigh me down, I like to use it as an invitation. An invitation to kick up my creativity, and make space for new holiday crafts, paper crafts and acrylic paintings.

Creativity in the Early Evenings
When the days shorten, I find myself spending more time in my art studio during the day and less in the evenings when the nights are so long. Acrylic painting feels different in October—the colors I reach for are not the usual palette I use. My paint colors during the holiday seasons are much bolder. This year may be different, Halloween and Christmas are leaning alot towards pinks and pastels. It remains to be seen if my art will lean that way too.
And let’s not forget paper crafting. There’s something magical and warm about layering textures and cutting out little details while the wind picks up outside. Paper projects in fall take on that cozy vibe—think vintage book pages, warm plaid patterns, or even whimsical Halloween-inspired cuts.
Letting Nature Guide Your Art
This time of year is a gentle reminder that change can be beautiful. The trees don’t hold on to every leaf—they let go, and the result is gorgeous. That lesson translates perfectly into art. Sometimes the best thing we can do is loosen our grip, experiment, and let the creative process flow.
October invites us to embrace imperfection. To try new ideas in our journals, to play with colors we don’t usually reach for, to let a project take a surprising turn.
Why Fall is the Perfect Season for Creativity
-
More time indoors = more time for projects. As the sun sets earlier, evenings feel longer. That’s bonus time to paint, craft, or even experiment with new techniques.
-
Seasonal inspiration is everywhere. Pumpkins on porches, mums in full bloom, cozy sweaters—October practically hands you a color palette and mood board.
-
It’s grounding. There’s something deeply peaceful about working with your hands when the world outside is transitioning. It connects you to the rhythm of the season.
So as October settles in, I’m choosing to see the shorter days as inspiration for me to get into the art room. More opportunities to gather supplies, hit a sale at Michaels or Hobby Lobby, and lean into the joy of making.
