Happy July!
Can you believe we're already halfway through the year?
I don't know about you, but somewhere between New Year's resolutions, grocery shopping, laundry piles, work, family, appointments, and wondering what happened to that perfectly good roll of painter's tape, the first six months flew by.
The good news?
July feels different.
It feels lighter.
The days are longer. The flowers are blooming. The iced coffee somehow tastes even better. We spend more time outside, gather with family and friends, watch fireworks, and celebrate everything that makes summer...well...summer.
This year feels especially meaningful as we celebrate America's 250th birthday.
For 250 years we've celebrated freedom, courage, creativity, innovation, and the idea that ordinary people can build extraordinary things.
That got me thinking...
What if this July, we celebrated a different kind of independence?
Creative independence.
Freedom From Perfection
How many times have you told yourself...
"I'm not artistic."
"I'll start when I have more time."
"I'll probably mess it up."
"Maybe someday."
Friend...
Let's declare independence from all of that.
Creativity isn't about making museum-worthy masterpieces.
It's about giving yourself permission to play.
It's about the feelings you get as you are creating.
It's painting a flower that doesn't look exactly like the reference photo.
It's gluing paper in a junk journal because you love the colors.
It's making something that simply makes you smile.
No judges.
No grades.
No pressure.
Freedom From "Too Busy"
Women are experts at taking care of everyone else.
The kids.
The spouse.
The parents.
The pets.
The job.
The house.
The endless to-do list.
Then somehow we're surprised when we feel exhausted and wonder where we went.
Here's your reminder:
Taking 30 minutes to paint, craft, doodle, journal, or create isn't selfish.
It's maintenance.
Just like watering a garden.
You can't keep giving if your own creative well has run dry.
Freedom To Be a Beginner
One of my favorite things about teaching art is watching someone say...
"I've never done this before."
Then an hour later they're smiling because they created something they didn't think they could.
Every artist started somewhere.
Every crafter was once a beginner.
Every masterpiece began with one brushstroke.
Don't wait until you're "good enough."
Start while you're still figuring it out.

Freedom To Create Joy
The world gives us plenty of reasons to feel stressed.
Your creative space should be the opposite.
It should be where you laugh.
Experiment.
Make a mess.
Forget what time it is.
Listen to your favorite music.
Sip your coffee.
And remember that you're allowed to enjoy yourself.
Sometimes that's exactly the reset your mind has been asking for.
Celebrate Your Own Independence
As fireworks light up the sky this Fourth of July, I hope you'll also celebrate something a little quieter.
Give yourself permission to create.
To slow down.
To make something simply because it brings you joy.
To stop worrying about perfect.
To remember that creativity doesn't belong to "artistic people."
It belongs to anyone willing to pick up a paintbrush, a glue stick, a pencil, or a pair of scissors.
Including you.
So here's my July challenge.
Declare your own Creative Independence.
Spend just 30 minutes this week making something that makes you happy.
Not for social media.
Not for work.
Not because you have to.
Just because your heart could use a little sunshine.
Because sometimes the smallest creative moments end up making the biggest difference.
Happy July, my creative friends.
Now go make something wonderful.

What are you declaring independence from this month?
Perfection?
Overthinking?
Being too busy?
Or maybe just waiting for the "right time" to start creating?
