(Part 2 of the Snowman Ornament Series)
Here is Part 1:
How to make a snowman ornament

If you love projects that are cute, cozy, and made from scraps, this one is for you.

In Part 1, we made an adorable snowman ornament. You can find that video here:

In Part 2, I’m showing you how to give that same snowman a little twist—by turning him into a large paper clip bookmark for your junk journal.

And yes… he’s just as adorable peeking out of a journal as he is hanging on a tree. ❄️

This project is beginner-friendly, budget-friendly, and perfect for using up those little bits of ribbon, felt, beads, and odds & ends we all save “just in case.”

(See? Past-you was right.)

Supplies You’ll Need

Nothing fancy here—this is a scrap-bin project through and through.

  • 2 Styrofoam balls one larger (about 1¼", slightly bigger is fine)

  • Ribbon (cut strips or full ribbon)

  • Large paper clip (Amazon affiliate)

  • Hot glue gun + glue sticks

  • Craft knife (use carefully)

  • Scrap felt or fabric (for the hat)

  • Small buttons or beads

  • Seed beads (for eyes)

  • Pom-pom (optional but adorable)

  • Pipe cleaner

  • Sharpie or paint marker

  • Scissors

💡 Tip: If you don’t have exact supplies—improvise. This project is very “you do you.”

Step 1: Create the Snowman Skirt

Start by attaching your ribbon to the center of the styrofoam bowl using a small dollop of hot glue. Let it set just enough so it doesn’t pull when you begin wrapping.

Now wrap the ribbon around the ball:

  • Add glue to the styrofoam

  • Press the ribbon down

  • Fold it back slightly to create pleats (optional—but cute)

Repeat until the ball is fully wrapped.

Heads up: This is the trickiest part of the project. Take your time—and keep those fingers safe from hot glue.

Step 2: Add a Finished Edge + Insert the Paper Clip

Once the skirt is done, wrap a second ribbon around the top to cover any messy edges and give it a finished look.

Before closing it up completely:

  • Use a craft knife to carefully make a small slit underneath

  • Add a dab of glue to the end of the paper clip

  • Insert it into the slit and let it set

👉 Pro tip: Always keep the seam and paper clip on the back so your snowman faces forward in your journal.

Step 3: Add the Snowman Head

Glue a second styrofoam ball on top for the head. Don’t worry if glue shows—we’re covering it up shortly.

Now the fun part:

  • Add a button for the nose

  • Draw a simple smile with a Sharpie

  • Glue tiny seed beads for eyes

  • Add rosy cheeks with a paint marker

Step 4: Make the Hat

Using scrap felt or fabric:

  1. Cut a rectangle

  2. Trace a curve on one side using something round

  3. Roll the straight edges together to form a cone

  4. Glue in place

  5. Add a pom-pom on top

  6. Wrap a small ribbon around the base as trim

Trim the hat slowly until it fits just right, then glue it onto the snowman’s head.

Step 5: Arms + Scarf

For the arms:

  • Cut a pipe cleaner

  • Fold it in half

  • Curl the ends slightly for hands

  • Glue it around the back and let dry completely

For the scarf:

  • Cut a small piece of ribbon

  • Gently tie around the neck (not too tight!)

  • Glue ends in place and trim as needed

You can also:

  • Add a carrot nose

  • Put something in his hand

  • Give him extra buttons or beads

There are no rules here.

Step 6: Add Him to Your Junk Journal

Slide the paper clip onto a page, fluff the skirt a bit, and close the journal.

And just like that… you’ve got the cutest little snowman popping out of your pages.

Yes, the paper clip might lean a little.
No, it does not matter.
Yes, he’s still adorable.

Why I Love This Project

  • Uses scraps you already have

  • Works as decor and function

  • Perfect for junk journals, planners, and handmade gifts

  • Easy enough to make multiples (because you will want to)

If you enjoyed this project, make sure to watch Part 1: The Snowman Ornament, and save this idea for later—you’ll want it back out next winter (or honestly… anytime).
