A Couch-Friendly Craft Setup for Sick Days, Slow Days & Netflix Nights
Let’s talk about something real for a second.
Not every day is a “sit at the craft table for three hours” kind of day.
Some days you’re sick.
Some days your body hurts.
Some days you just want to sit on the couch, binge watch Netflix, and do something creative without dragging out your entire craft room.
So I had an idea.
I took a simple breakfast-in-bed tray with folding legs… and turned it into a junk journaling and paper craft station.
And honestly? It might be one of my favorite practical projects ever.
Here’s exactly how I did it.
Step 1: Clean the Tray
Before anything pretty happens, we clean.
I wiped the tray down thoroughly so I was starting with a fresh surface. No dust. No crumbs. No mystery stickiness from its previous breakfast life.
Simple, but important.
Step 2: Mod Podge + Decoupage = Pretty AND Practical
Now here’s where the magic starts.
I decoupaged the top of the tray using paper scraps. (Because of course I did. We’re junk journal people. We use the scraps.)
Then I sealed the entire surface with Mod Podge.
I did this for two reasons:

It makes the tray beautiful.

It seals and protects the surface.
Now glue wipes right off. Paint splatters aren’t a disaster. And the whole thing feels finished and intentional instead of just “a tray I stuck stuff on.”
It’s functional and pretty. We love that combination.
Step 3: Add a 12-Inch Ruler
This might sound random, but trust me.
A 12” ruler lives on the tray now. It’s perfect for:

Tearing straight edges
-
Measuring small pieces
-
Scoring folds
-
Keeping things aligned
And because it stays on the tray, I’m not getting up every five minutes to go find it.
Convenience = more creating.
Step 4: Upcycle a Small Box for Tiny Things
I added a small upcycled box to hold paper clips, beads, tiny decals, and little embellishments.
You know… all those adorable things that disappear instantly if they’re loose.
Keeping them contained means:

No beads rolling onto the floor

No clips falling into couch cushions
-
No crawling around later wondering where that tiny mushroom sticker went
(We’ve all been there.)
Step 5: Three Small Square Organizers
Next, I added three small square containers for the essentials:

Glue
-
Clips
-
Tape
-
Other small must-haves
They fit neatly on the tray and keep everything visible but not chaotic.
The key here was not overloading it. Just enough supplies to create without turning it into a rolling craft store.
Step 6: An Upcycled Can for Taller Tools
For scissors, pens, pencils, and other taller items, I used an upcycled can.
Simple. Functional. Zero extra cost.
Now everything stands upright and easy to grab — and nothing is poking through a pile of paper.
Why This Little Tray Matters So Much
This isn’t just a cute craft hack.
This is about accessibility.
It’s for:

People who don’t get around easily

Women who are exhausted

Anyone who wants to sit on the couch and create while watching their favorite show
You don’t need a giant desk.
You don't need to take over the kitchen table.
You don’t need a perfect studio.
You don’t need three uninterrupted hours.
You need:

A small surface
-
A few supplies
-
And permission to create right where you are
This tray folds up.
It moves easily.
It lets creativity meet you on the couch.
And some days? That’s everything.
