If you’ve ever sat down with your junk journal, art journal, or mixed media book and thought…
“I want to create… but where do I begin?”
You’re not alone. That moment right there? That’s exactly where printable collage sheets PDFs shine.
When I don’t have the time, energy, or emotional bandwidth to start from scratch, printables become my gentle on-ramp back into creativity. They’re not about shortcuts. They’re about removing friction so you can actually show up. I am all about using the tools we have available.
Creative journaling, for me, is a place to work through thoughts and feelings as they come up — before they take up permanent residence in my head and start weighing everything down. Once I get them out and onto a page, I’ve already won half the battle.
And here’s the truth:
Art journaling helps all the feels… but it has to be easy and fun, or I just won’t do it.
So let’s talk about why printables have earned a permanent spot in my creative routine.
1. Cutting Ahead of Time Saves So Much Creative Energy
This one alone is worth it.
I’ve learned that my best creative sessions happen when I’m away from the computer, not still fussing with files and fonts. So I print my collage pages ahead of time and do the fussy cutting while watching TV with my iced coffee.
Is it glamorous? No.
Is it efficient? Absolutely.
When it’s finally time to journal, everything is ready. No stalling. No decision fatigue. Just grab, glue, and go.

2. Printables Are Beginner-Friendly (and Mood-Friendly)
One of my favorite things about junk journaling is that it lets me play with mixed media on a small, no-pressure scale.
I love making messy backgrounds — paint, marks, layers — and then letting the printed images work with whatever I’ve already created. It becomes this conversation between color, texture, and feeling.
Printables don’t compete with your background. They support it and enhance it.
I have a monthly series creating a cohesive and matching bundle of papers and ephemera for the 12 months of 2026. You can get January 2026 for FREE Here:
3. You Don’t Have to Learn How to Draw to Make Meaningful Art
I once heard someone say that using other people’s art in your journal is “cheating.”
Hard no. 🙅♀️There are NO rules in journaling!
Do quilt artists weave their own fabric?
Do collage artists grow the trees for the paper?
Of course not.
Creativity has always been collaborative. Learning to draw is wonderful — but sometimes you just need to make art now, without pressure or performance.
Teamwork makes the dream work… even in your journal.
I use tracers/templates in my acrylic art. I use the tools I have.
4. Less Pressure = More Joy
This might be my favorite benefit.
When I use printable images, I feel instantly more relaxed. If a page doesn’t turn out how I imagined? No panic. I can print the images again and try something new.
That freedom to experiment — without fear of “wasting” materials — changes everything.
Creative journaling should feel safe. Printables help create that safety net.
5. Collage Can Be a Low-Mess Creative Option
You don’t need a full studio setup to journal creatively.
All you really need is:
-
a printer
-
paper
-
scissors
-
glue
-
something to color or mark with
That’s it.
Printables are especially helpful when supplies are limited or when you want a quieter, calmer creative session without paint water everywhere.

6. You Can Print on Any Paper You Want
This is where the fun really begins.
Printable collage sheets can be printed on:
-
cardstock
-
watercolor paper
-
clear or white sticker paper
-
tissue paper
-
old book pages
-
image transfer paper
Trying different papers completely changes the look and feel of the same image — and experimentation is half the joy of paper crafting.
Your printer is basically a creative playground. Use it.
7. Collecting & Sorting Images Is a Creative Practice Too
There is something deeply satisfying about having a little stash of beautiful images ready to go.
That said… collecting can become its own hobby. 😅
Ask me how I know. LOL! I have a video on how I sort my papers and ephemera on my Youtube channel.
If organizing images brings you joy, lean into it. Just remember to balance collecting with actually using them. Or don’t. Your creativity, your rules.
We all know that acquiring crafting supplies and using crafting supplies are 2 very different skills

8. Printables Help Reduce Craft Supply Waste
Many pre-made embellishments come wrapped in layers of plastic. With printables, you can print only what you need, when you need it.
Less waste. More intention. Win-win. But also less JUNK to Junk Journal with. -so is it a win win? LOL!
9. You Can Resize Images for Any Journal
Tiny journal? Big art book? Somewhere in between?
Printable images can be resized to fit whatever you’re working in — no trimming gymnastics required. A small detail, but such a helpful one.
You can resize right on your printer or copy machine. I use this handy tool!
Check out my Youtube video here!!!
10. Printables Are Affordable & Reusable
Yes, you need a printer — but once you have one, printable collage sheets are incredibly cost-effective.
You can:
-
print on demand
-
reprint favorites
-
experiment freely
-
use different papers without buying new supplies
That flexibility makes them one of the most budget-friendly tools in creative journaling.
If you want easy, journal printables and ephemera, 4 tutorial projects a month and a great supportive community, you can join the Junk Journal Hive!
Final Thought
Creative journaling doesn’t need to be complicated to be powerful.
Printables remove the barriers — time, pressure, perfection — so you can focus on what actually matters:
showing up, expressing yourself, and finding a little peace in the process.
If it makes creating easier…
If it helps you start when motivation is low…
If it brings you joy…
Then it belongs in your journal. Period. 💛
