Why I Don’t Worry About Being a “Real Artist- LOL!

For years, I’ve heard the question—sometimes directly, sometimes implied: “Do you consider yourself a real artist?” My answer? Absolutely, yes! But here’s the thing—I don’t define “real artist” the way some might. I’m not chasing gallery walls, museum exhibitions, or fame in the fine art world. My art is about something entirely different: joy, connection, peace and the simple  feeling of putting paint on a brush and letting it flow.

What Does It Mean to Be an Artist?

To me, being an artist isn’t about titles, fine art or being in a museum.  It’s about creating a feeling inside and through that hopefully something pretty.  It’s about taking time to step away from the noise of life and dive into a space where you can express, explore, and simply be.

I’m a decorative artist. I paint whimsical designs, cheerful scenes, and projects that are approachable for everyone—whether you’re 6 or 96. I create not to impress but to inspire and encourage others to create some joy in their life through art. When I paint, I feel calm, centered, and alive. That’s the feeling I want to share with others, whether through a step-by-step painting class, a shelf sitter village, or a downloadable art tutorial.

Art for Joy and Therapy

For me, painting isn’t about perfection—it’s about the process. It’s about the way colors mix, how brushstrokes build a story, and how creating art lowers stress and opens the heart. This is what art therapy is about, and it’s a gift I want to share.

I’ve seen the magic happen time and time again in my classes. People come in hesitant, convinced they can’t paint or create anything “good.” By the end, they’re beaming, holding up their work like it’s a masterpiece (because it is). That’s the power of art. It’s not about fine art—it’s about finding art within yourself.

“Real Artist” vs. Fine Artist

I may not fit the traditional mold of a fine artist, but that doesn’t make me any less of a real artist. Being an artist isn’t about the medium or the recognition—it’s about the heart and intention you put into your work. Whether your canvas hangs in a museum or on the wall of your living room, art is art and it can't be wrong.

Why I Don’t Worry About Labels

At the end of the day, I don’t worry about whether I’m considered a “real artist” by traditional standards because my goal isn’t about fitting into someone else’s definition. My goal is to help people create a little joy in their lives through painting and crafting.

I create because it feels good, and I want others to feel that, too. If picking up a brush or watching me pick up a brush, can bring even a moment of peace or happiness to someone’s day, then my work is meaningful—and to me, that’s what being a real artist is all about.

The Takeaway

You don’t have to aspire to be a fine artist to call yourself an artist. You don’t need to worry about galleries or critics. If you create with love, joy, and purpose, then you’re an artist in the truest sense.

So, to anyone wondering if they’re “real” enough, my answer is this: If you create, you are. Don’t let the world’s labels define your art. Just keep creating, sharing, and bringing joy to yourself and others. That’s the real art of it all.
